Warm Hearted Friends

Patricia & Radha chum BVsYou know the ones … who stick by you … who smile, hug and comfort you … I wrote this song to thank you. It’s going on my album. And, yes, the album is still happening. Having blogged last September that I was in full swing recording, my dear, sweet, wonderful dad passed away.

I needed you then, friends, and you were there. Thank you for your acceptance while I retreated into myself for months, adjusting to dad’s departure. He was my hero and inspiration, and I came to a grinding halt missing him … Dad sang in a male choir. Music and humour spilled out of him constantly. So I knew he would want me to sing again and to finish my album and share the joy with you all.

At last my energy to sing came back. (That’s my warm hearted friend, Patricia with me in the photo. We’re about to sing together …). I’m recording again with Steve. Feels great.

Nothing comes in ones … especially warm hearted friends – I’m blessed to have many. My projects don’t seen to come one at a time either. I’m now working in my painting space, getting ready for a third exhibition. Plus I’ve undertaken a year’s study – Maori Visual Arts – at Te Wananga O Aotearoa (Maori University) – loving it! It’s all or nothing with life for me it seems! Now to thank you all, dear ones in this world and the next …

Warm Hearted Friends
Sometimes I shiver on a cold winter’s day
Friends, when you’re around I never feel that way
Barely need the heater, forget to light the fire
You radiate such a great glow!

Thank you, my warm hearted friends
You light up my life, keep the sun shining through
Thank goodness for warm hearted friends
Warm hearted friends like you

You make the world a better place. I wanna do that too
To shine a light together – a little spark or two
Along with you I wanna do some good – is that naive?
You keep me believing that I can

Thank you, my warm hearted friends …

“My Goodness!” you say – and well you may;
Coz goodness is your middle name!
I know you’re sure to reply that we’re all good inside.
All the more reason for me to say …

Look around the room – we’re only here for a while
Time enough to give someone a hug or a smile
Time enough to thank someone for the little things they do
That is why I‘m here thanking you

Thank you, my warm hearted friends
You light up my life, keep the sun shining through
Thank goodness for warm hearted friends
Warm hearted friends like you

Album on the Way!

one-thing-i-wanna-sayThey say silence is golden. Let’s make patience golden too … ‘good things come to those who wait’ and all that … I’ve been ultra patient about recording my songs; re-write after re-write to perfect every line before I commit. And a big thanks to you out there who’ve been very patient, emailing over the months to see when the song you want is going to be in your hands.

Recording with our local master engineer, Stephen Poulton, is now in full swing; guide tracks down, and hot players lined up for sessions. Will keep you informed. And I invite you to keep me informed too, as to what tracks you want on it! They well may be shaping up nicely already …

Happy Holidays & a Happy New Year

Here's to You

Smiling is a good idea; and feasting. You can never have too many songs that make you smile …  and feasts that make you feisty! So I wrote a happy little song for the ‘festive season’. Next thing I found my husband singing it, (tho he swears he cannot sing). So I reckon it must be a goodie! I’ve sent it to Radio New Zealand and hope they’re going to play it to you over the next week or two. Let me know if you hear it. And especially if you find yourself singing along!

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year

Peace and love to you as the year draws to an end
Many happy times with family and friends
Sit back and relax, celebrate and cheer
“Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!”

Many ways to celebrate special days and times
Many ways to gather, many ways to find that
One love that gifts us peacefulness and cheer,
Happy holidays and a happy new year. (Yeah!)
“Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!”

PS
Click here for the Happy Holidays & a Happy New Year score
(just a simple melody line and chords). I wrote it in the key of C, to make it easy for most people to sing and play, including on ukulele. But my voice is not so ‘most people’ so I recorded it in A – version in C to come hopefully next year.

Special thanks to Steve Poulton, sound engineer and guitarist extrordinaire, for recording it and playing bass, and the lovely, tropical guitar licks .

Light of Love

SettingSun Mar10  Do you ever wonder how there can be so many love songs out there, yet people keep writing more? Surely we will reach saturation point, and run out of ideas or melodies one day? That’s not a new idea … and sometimes the mind ponders such thoughts. But the heart seem beyond ideas. It just keeps on singing … And if you’re lucky, sometimes a beautiful new love song bursts forth.

Every time I write a love song I aspire to it being my ultimate one. I think this one is.  Hope I get to sing it for you soon, and that you’ll do what everyone else seems to do – sing the chorus with me, thinking of someone dear, and the timeless nature of love …

Light of Love

If I couldn’t see you in the light of the moon
Or the glow of the stars in the Milky Way above
If I couldn’t see you even in the brightest sun at noon
I would still see you in the light of love

In the light of love, see you in the light of love
In the light of love, see you in the light of love

If you forget to brush your hair or you wear those funny shoes
If you don’t understand my feelings when the going’s rough
If you leave your dirty clothes and stuff across the bathroom floor
You’re beautiful. And I can only see you in the light of love

Don’t tend to see crazy me in an aura so bright
I go too far, don’t go far enough, can’t seem to get the balance right
Then you come along with your great big heart, embracing all that stuff
Thank you for seeing me in the light of love

When we cannot see each other in the light of the moon
Or the glow of the stars in the Milky Way above
When we can’t see each other even in the brightest sun at noon
I will still see you, you will still see me
We will be together in the light of love

In the light of love, see you in the light of love
In the light of love, see you in the light of love

Timeless Moments

Rush, rush, rush … it’s crazy; cheap muzac blaring in the mall, cars bumping each other in overcrowded carparks, piles of junk no one actually needs, too many sales people …  insanity.  It’s high time I had a timeless moment.

Radha with Ruby webWhich brings to mind one such moment I experienced with my grand daughter; timelessness refreshing me, opening that moment, and my little grand daughter there in it with me, as a beautiful new beginning.  I wanted to capture this in song so I could relive it over and over. And as a songwriter, my dream is that  somehow my song will transport you in a timeless moment too …

I’d love to hear about a special moment you have experienced – click ‘Comment‘ (below), and tell us about it. That way, if enough readers comment, we’ll all get to enjoy quite a few! Here’s one from me for  starters …

Beautiful New Beginning © Radha Sahar

The summer heat is fading. She says
‘Gran – it’s gardening weather’
We plant some kale and cavalo
Gather the pumpkins in
She’s humming a sweet little song
There’s a feeling of forever
We’ve all we need in a morning fresh and new

This is life how it’s meant to be
Simple contentment and harmony
And if I go tomorrow she’ll remember me
In a peaceful autumn day with not a breath of wind
As a wide blue sky sings
A beautiful new beginning

We come indoors, wash our hands
And while Gran prepares dinner
She draws a picture of the sky
With a rainbow in the corner
The sun is bright in her world
It warms the coming winter
We’re kindred souls together on this earth

This is life how it’s meant to be …

She’s my little pumpkin, now asleep
I gaze at her skin – it seems to glow
She’s snuggled in a soft, pink rug
On the floor beside my bed
There’s a shiver in the air
I pull her covers over
She’ll be going home tomorrow bathed and fed

This is life how it’s meant to be
Simple contentment and harmony
And if I go tomorrow she’ll remember me
In a peaceful autumn day with not a breath of wind
Not a breath …
She is my beautiful new beginning

Songline Running

BBG_YES_webYou’re a creative type? Love the buzz of that busy mind bursting forth new ideas? Of course! There’s only one little hiccup; a bug in the cranial software. It’s called ‘conscience’.

This little pest insists on telling you you should be exercising (just when you thought you’d mastered the fabulously healthy skill of dismissing all ‘shoulds’).  It gnaws at you with the ‘exercise’ message, ensuring you faintly recall a virtuous feeling you had when you did some years ago. But a huge groan keeps pace with conscience, fuelling an ongoing battle for songwriters like me, who are notorious for not exercising anything other than the mind. Until now.

Today,  a new sport, Songline Running, invented itself. And it’s not the regular sport of running with headphones on.  It goes like this:

You take up Songline Running, (having a name for something always helps).  In your first session, totally new, (and, you tell yourself, ‘vastly better’), songlines run through your mind as you run – (and, you tell yourself, this is the only way they come in at this level). Even miniature runs yield this quality of creative occurrences.  I call my miniature runs ‘shuffles’ …

Then follows the best bit. You treat yourself with the well deserved REWARD – (you might need to picture the reward before you begin, to get you out the door in the first place). And the reward is? Vastly better songlines of course, (or poetry if you’re a poet, novel ideas if you’re a novelist, and so on). You get to slam all that breakthrough, higher level brilliance into your songwriting software the moment you get home. Athletes call this a ‘warm down’ – you see them stretching in all sorts of gangly poses after the run. But for we ‘arteests’ the best ‘warm down’ is to ‘get it down’ … I’ve just completed my first Songline Run and I couldn’t wait to tell you!  I’m FULL of world-shattering new ideas.

Next time I post a song, you’ll be so impressed you’ll immediately take up the sport yourself, (that is, unless you’re already impressed with this triumphant little article, in which case, you’ll take up the sport now). OK. I’ve warmed down getting this all down. And I’ve popped those gorgeous new lines into my songwriting software, which I reckon is thanking me. Now it’s time for brekkies.

Have I convinced you? Then please let me know how you go!

Warm Hearted Friends

Your response as I exude gratitude to you as a warm hearted friend?
Chandan Jutta Yana & Rubys Hairdo SM “My goodness!
Most appropriate – you are full of it. Pat yourself on the back and enjoy it.

“Thank goodness!” I reply, thanking you … (the embodiment of goodness itself).

It follows that you also have many good friends. And you’ll need a song to thank them all.  There are so many good people out there to thank, and everyone needs a song now and then. You can thank me for writing this one if you like … remember, it’s for you! Thank you all.

Barely need the heater, forget to light the fire
You radiate such a great glow!

It’s so cosy here coz of you
It’s that warmth and cheer in the little things you do
It’s so cosy here, sunny too
The sweetness in happiness depends
On having warm hearted friends like you
