Leonard Cohen & Cohencidences …

It just goes to show: when you pen the lyrical depths of the soul like no one else can, take a single instrument into the studio and sing your aching soul bare, no matter how many decades old you are, you’re god. Half the country is lined up to worship your album  – and it’s not even released!  That’s a Cohencidence.

Now don’t get a Cohencidence confused with an ordinary synchronicity. It’s much more than that! When Leonard writes, when Leonard sings, and you happen to hear him, that’s a Cohencidence: an incident of note; a precedence with a life-lasting consequence … Already I’ve run out of words, and that’s something for a Gemini!

How Cohencidently my man and I were affected hearing a track from Leonard’s new album, Old Ideas, on National Radio! We’re off to buy it – the physical CD too. We want to turn the jewel case inside out, read every credit and lyric, hold it in our hands … Most of all we want to listen … to bask …

And we want to hear about your Cohencidences … Did you go to the concert? Have you seen the London DVD? Have you recovered yet? – (since a Cohencidence is something one usually doesn’t recover from – one’s soul is left threadbare in places) … What are your most Cohencidental tracks? Any chance Baby Boomer Girl could get a spot at his next show, ya’ reckon? (since she almost qualifies, decade-wise 🙂

Yummy Food Avatar Style and Losing Weight!

Free Food ImageApologies for the looooooooong silence: it has taken me a year to find out how to really attain a ‘Body Like an Avatar Alien’. (see x2 past posts on this all-engrossing topic 🙂 ). I’m well on the way now, having discovered the secret I’d been searching for this past 12 months. It was right in front of my eyes: Plants! Plant-based Wholefood nutrition is the key. I’ve shed 8 kilos without trying, and I’m singing like a million dollars. When I’m down another 3 or 4, I’ll post a skite pic and a new song to go with it …

Meanwhile,  let’s journey back to Pandora, and see exactly how those Navi Aliens maintain perfect health and their slim, blue waists.

What is Plant-based Wholefood Nutrition?
It is eating a balanced diet of plants and unprocessed, plant-based foods: that’s all they eat there on Pandora. And it’s what our human ancestors ate way back in our primate days.

Meeting up with all those gorgeous Aliens munching vegetation, I asked them “You’re not Vegan are you?”
They told me that, in common with vegans on Planet Earth, they don’t eat animal foods. Like vegans they eat plant foods. But they are horrified at what can constitute ‘plant foods’ here on Earth: highly processed foods such as white flour, sugar and oil. The Navi won’t touch those, as they are not whole foods.  Like vegans they have compassion for animals and so don’t eat them. But the Navi Plant-based heritage is centred primarily on health.

Why don’t they eat Oils?
The Navi tell me that ‘healthy oils’ are the oils inherent in whole foods themselves. There is no need to eat that refined oil stuff we have on Earth: it is far healthier to not eat it. While oil is essential to their health, all the oil they need can be adequately sourced from plants – even the omegas. That goes for we humans too, they said.

Do the Aliens only eat Raw Foods?
So far they seemed to have no particular emphasis on raw, though they eat lots of it!  But they eat cooked too.  They told me that this enables them to get more balanced nutrition, and better protein levels. The foods they cook are mainly those either not healthy or not easy to eat raw – e.g. potatoes, soy, dhal & beans, grains (yes, they love those foods up there on Pandora too!). Together with greens, these provide the Navi with complete protein, and billions of micro nutrients. They prefer including legumes & grains to the high intake of nuts & seeds, dried fruit and rare superfoods needed in a dedicated raw food regime.

Did this Way of Eating Originate on Planet Pandora?
It did. but it also did on Planet Earth at the same time – amazing eh!  With their extra-terrestrial powers, the Navi have been able to watch us down here on planet Earth. They were happy that plant-based wholefood nutrition formed the predominant content of the human diet for millennia. They knew that peoples such as the Inuit, the Tibetans, and others in cold climates evolved to eat animals; – they had no other choice – not many plants grew there!). Humans have always eaten some form of animal food, which would’ve been necessary to get Vit B12. But aside from the wealthy elite, they ate much smaller quantities than we do today. The Navi are so evolved they even synthesize their own B12 – they reckon we’ll evolve to that too!

Well, thanks guys! I’m sold. I’ve been vegetarian for forty years, all the time struggling somewhat with my weight. Hey – I wasn’t gross, but I did need to get into that good BMI level. The secret for me was taking those extra few steps – cutting out animal foods, oil, sugar and processed food. I have never felt better!  Charles & I will be giving a presentation on it on Tuesday (23rd Aug), via the Transition Town movement. Venue: Alicetown Community Centre, Victoria St, Lower Hutt. Time: 7.30pm. Gold coin donation on the door.
Meanwhile , the following  ‘Earthly’ credits are due …

The contemporary plant-based whole-food movement, where no animal protein is eaten, grew from research done by several American nutritionists, doctors and scientists. At the core are Dr T Colin Campbell, (Professor Emeritus, Biochemistry & Nutrition, Cornell University), Dr Caldwell Esselstyn, (heart surgeon, Cleveland Clinic), Drs Dean Ornish & John McDougall, John Robbins. (see the bios in the last section of the Presentation Folder).  Find out more on the T Colin Campbell Foundation website.

Baby Boomer Girl – a Boomer of a Band!

.
.
.
.

A triumphant Baby Boomer Girl, the band, rocked Wellington fans at their launch,  Saturday 12th June, delivering an energetic set of pithy & humorous original material to a boomer audience. From crowd-shouter, Black – (Gothic metal topped with a black wig) –  to ‘play it again’ Baby Boomer Girl signature song, the audience was right there relating to both groove and lyrics. General feedback: Great songs!

The programme opened with a close sound in the first set by Baby Boomer Girl duo, Bernard Wells & Radha Sahar. And yes, the audience feedback  confirmed “there were tears in our eyes” during DNA,  senses touched by Roll On and Captured, and knowing laughter during I Won’t Forget You and Wardrobe Full of Shoes. Thanks to engineer David Antony Clark’s skill on the desk, we enjoyed a resounding  “we could hear every word!”

During break people sipped mid-winter wine & punch and stocked up on Baby Boomer Girl tee shirts, singles and a memoir Live EP of the duo. Then a hushed audience adjusted their trilbys as the band juxtapositioned Radha’s ‘mother’s apron’ look with the rebellious Not Gonna be Invisible lyric, to a driving rock pace.

Evan Williams, an excellent drummer, and Matt Parlane on a mean bass, are known for their talent in bands such as  Pearl, the JediNites and the Cattlestops. Bernard Wells is a well known and much loved multi-instrumentalist in acoustic bands such as Chilli Jam, Ballyscully, Dargaville and his duo with Peter Daly. In his move to electric guitar in Baby Boomer Girl Wells gets a great  sound in tasteful licks and raunchy rock lead breaks. Together with Radha’s strong vocal sound and energetic rhythm guitar, the band earned an enthusiastic ‘Cool!‘  from boomers, teens & twenties alike.

Look out for the Baby Boomer Girl band and duo.  Be there – introduce yourself – we’d love to meet you!

Free Food

Free Food ImageThanks for your feedback on Have a Body Like an Avatar Alien … Evidently all the food on planet Pandora is Plant-Based and free! That got me thinking … Life is for living. Love is for giving, stirring us into acts of humanity, like donating food to the poor and eating less so others can have more. This magnanimous gesture will help you attain your Avatar body faster too! The Na’vi want me to write a ‘Free Food’ song  …

Free Food
When we were kids, food was free all day
Didn’t know mama and daddy had to pay
We just filled our plates and ate away

Free food, let it be, dude, free food!
Free food, let it be, dude, free food!
Free food, let it be. Hey Jude!
May you and all have free food!

Now its
Meat free, egg free, dairy free out there
Gluten free and sugar free everywhere
We’re sussed. It surely must be we can share

Free food, let it be, dude, free food …
For Africa, for Timor and Bengal
For war zones & for poor homes. Why do we stall?
We’ve grown enough for years to feed them all

So …
Free food, let it be, dude, free food!
Free food, let it be, dude, free food!
Free food, let it be. Hey Jude!
May you and all have free food!

Growing Younger

Growing Young imageIt feels so great when people you haven’t seen for a while greet you with,  “You look ten years younger!”  It’s been happening so much to me lately, I decided I actually am growing younger – which deserves to be sung about!

What are your thoughts about it? Do you think it’s possible, or am I deluding myself? Have you experienced growing younger? If so, we’d all like to read your comments! To get the discussion going, here’s a song …  I’ve still to record it, but there’s plenty of time –  I’ll still be singing it fifty years from now 🙂

Growing Young With You
© 2009 Radha Sahar

As the sun is setting, we talk about growing old
How people go quiet, they slow down
And set into a mould
But we are far from setting, our love is fresh & new
It’s summer. We have come in from the cold

I’m growing young with you – how wonderful!
No need to go the old way we’re expected to
I’m feeling young with you, so beautiful!
I’ll dance with you until our song is sung
I’ll still be young with you

Vast spaces open out in me, deeper every day
My body’s growing taller instead of shrinking away
A flood of life expanding. No winter dark or grey
The power of love reversing time a way

Every day is born anew, clear and sparkling bright
And every star in the sky shines for us tonight
Thankfulness has got me. This only came to be
Coz you are into being young with me

I’m growing young with you – how wonderful!
No need to go the old way we’re expected to
I feel so young with you and you’re so beautiful!
I’ll love you till our children’s children grow
And have children of their own
I’ll still be young with you

Until we turn at least a hundred and ten
And the cycle starts again
I’ll still be young with you

Missing Someone Right Now? – then Here’s the Song …

Missing You ImageThinking, in times when families gather together, how hard it is when someone you love dearly can’t be with you.

I wrote this song feeling the tender stuff you feel when missing your lover.  The next week I found myself singing it over the phone in heart-aching tones to my daughter & grand daughter five months into living across the other side of the world in Berlin –  the feelings were just the same.  So here’s a song for you if you’re missing someone … Feel free to send the words to them –  Missing You Lyric – May you be re-united soon!

Missing You
© Radha Sahar 2009

Don’t understand it.
Dunno what’s goin’ on
There’s a gap as wide as a football field
When you are gone

Such a deep down longing
Night and day
I eat chocolate cake
But it don’t seem to take
The hunger away

You’re my soothing syrup
You’re my healing balm
You’re my rib bone, baby
My 23rd psalm
You’re my heavenly twin
Wish I was kissin’ you
There’s an hour in every minute
I am missing you

Can’t explain it – there’s no tears. I’m not in pain
It’s just the natural thing to do, to hang out with you
Now that you’re in my veins

I lie awake well after one
And when daylight finally comes
I keep busy and yet
I never seem to get anything done
You’re my soothing syrup …

Never found I could count on love
As much as this
Sweet everyday, kinda work and play
Togetherness
You fill my being
Like the morning sun
Can’t help smilin’ babe
I tell the whole parade
That we are one

You’re my soothing syrup
You’re my healing balm
You’re my rib bone, baby
My 23rd psalm
You’re my heavenly twin
Wish I was kissin’ you
There’s an hour in every minute
I am missing you

Baby Boomer Girl
© Radha Sahar Feb. 2009

Sixty years ago, burst into the world
Grew to be a sweet, compliant little girl
Seventeen years fitting in well, then
Woodstock shook me – had to rebel

Chorus
I say “No! I won’t sit down!
I say “Go to the edge of the world”
I say “No!” I go Boom! Boom! Boom!
I’m a baby boomer girl

Beardos, wierdos, chemical highs, then
Motherhood tamed me. Years flew by
Where did they go? Hello Gran! – Yes
A little bit’a mutton, but a whole lotta lamb!

Chorus

Women are mature, girls have fun
Women sit & walk, girls strut & run
Women analyse, girls laugh & play
I was a feminist so I can be a girl today

I’m a boom, I’m a chick. I’m a chicka chicka boom
I’m a boom, I’m a chick. I’m a boom boom      x3
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Gonna Boom! Boom! Boom! on the radio
Take the world by storm on video
Gonna rage in a rock band, misbehave
Gonna dance to my coffin and sing in my grave!

I say “No! I won’t sit down!
I say “Go to the edge of the world”
I say “No!” I go Boom! Boom! Boom!
I’m a baby boomer girl
I’m a Boom! Boom! Boomer Girl!

Being and Being Bold

BabyBoomerGirlMugshot2
‘What are you doing?’ confronts you every time you tweet on Twitter.  Then, in Facebook – ‘What are you doing?’  You start yelling inside, “I’m just being – that’s what I’m doing! – What’s wrong with being?”

You’re just being. You’re being wonderful. You’re being happy. Maybe you’re being sixty, like me – sixty years bold. Like you, I’m just being me and life is wonder-full.

Life crescendos as the sixth decade opens. Being 50 was the best time in life – then. But being sixty is even better – life just keeps getting better!’  A little plot of earth apparent on the horizon just intensifies appreciation and delight in absolutely everything.

Give me a ‘B’  – and put it in front of the word ‘old’.

Give me an “R’ – and put it in front of the word ‘aging’.

There are a few global authorities on being bold. I’ve just decided to join them.  If it means I look like a fool, I’ll be honoured.   I hereby step up and take the official title of ‘ fool’ and ‘bard’ – the whole nine yards! Scroll and enjoy my song lyrics …  and please add your bit – it’s all about us all.  It’s now my solemn duty to make you smile – I take that seriously (and I’m allowed to be serious sometimes too). I’m not a comedian at all. I’m not even going to try. I’m simply going to be me – that should be enough – give me an ‘M’ and an ‘E’ and sit them happily side by side, content just being.

Hmmm – now put that ‘B’ that ‘R’, that ME” all together with a big, delighted whoop of an ‘OO’ in the middle…   and you have BOOMER. Have a boomer life, being you – ya hoo! – (and following this blog of course!!!!).  Hugs.
